Tess Mosko Scherer | The Invisible Made Visible
from the Untold Stories Series
paper, cotton thread (machine stitched) Irish linen thread (hand stitched), wood, metal
12 T x 11 W x 5.5 D | $1500.
The marks of letters making up words has been an integral part of my work for over a decade. Recently, the words have been replaced by thread, stitches, and the marks made by the process of puncturing the paper to receive the stitch. These marks represent the stories that are untold, the words that do not need to be spoken, the memories that are cherished, or are yet to be formed.
This piece is about the intersection of our human condition and the earth we inhabit. About the visible and the invisible.

7 W x 4 D x 9.5 T | $1300.
Silence.
I spend a great deal of my time in silent solitude. Be it while working in my studio, or on my coputer.
I am comfortable with Silence, even when I am not alone. There is so much to be learned from the silent moments.
Grace, Peace and Ease are met through this relationship with silence.

Tess Mosko Scherer | Bird Song I

handmade paper, feathers printed on repurposed tea bags, cotton thread (machine stitched) Irish linen thread (hand stitched), wood, metal
14 W x 12 T x 8D | $1500.
Birds have been a constant symbol and mysterious messengers for as long as I can remember. Growing up in central New Jersey birds were ever present. However, their feathers would find their way to me in obscure locations with profound meaning.
During Covid, the quietness was the backdrop for their beautiful song that provided comfort during a time of uncertainty.
They live in two worlds, traversing the earth and the sky, moving from plane to plane with grace and ease.

In Celtic spirituality, a “thin place” is a location where the veil between heaven and earth is thin, making it easier to connect with Spirit. Thin places can be physical locations or mindful moments.
Some say that thin places can be places where people in the past worshipped and prayed, creating a portal between heaven and earth. Others say that thin places can be places where people can slow down, pause, and look with fresh eyes. I believe our Urban Farm is a thin place, a sacred space where Nature and Spirit collide. We share our lives with the inhabitants, domestic and wild, that inhabit this space.

Our lives are transformed by events often beyond our control. In 2010, my eldest sister’s acquired brain injury left her completely dependent on others for even the most simple tasks of daily living. Her once robust life was reduced to a small sphere of simplistic living.
I began photographing her after her injury 15 years ago. These images chronicle the swift pace of change in the past few months.

Living in a metropolitan area, it is not easy to reduce our eco-footprint. We do our best to produce food and strive to replenish the earth with what we withdraw from her.
Our efforts include solar panels, a hybrid car, organic gardens and orchard, composting, aquaponic pond, and chickens.
In the studio, I am mindful of my waste and recyle the scraps of paper generated through my art making.
This series is about my inquiry into my interruption on the cycle of nature.

For 11 years I have facilitated art classes for veterans. What amazes me about these extraordinary men and women is the diversity of the lives they have lived and how profoundly they were affected by their military service.
The images of the veterans in this exhibit depict specific individuals, yet they represent an era of veterans who have touched my life.

This image represents a specific person, but also serves as a symbol for the multitide of educators I have worked with. I’ve met many educators from across the globe – from China, Cuba, and Croatia. We have met as teachers, colleagues, and even those who’ve taken my ceramics classes.
Being an educator means thinking about other people’s needs: What do they need to know that will help them in their future? How can I help them learn in the most effective way for them?
